Over a period of seven consecutive days, between ∾⫛ and ⇋∾ March 2022, Štromajer secretly brought seven analogue and one digital artworks to seven art spaces in Frankfurt and exhibited them there unnoticed. Their fate is unknown.

In 1996, Štromajer used an animated gif (64⨯64 pixels) of a spinning cube in his first net art work 0.html.
25 years later, Sakrowski redesigned this iconic file into an augmented reality artwork.
In February and March 2022, Štromajer produced seven post-blockchain non-fungible cubes from the original gif and secretly exhibited them, along with a digital cube, at seven Frankfurt art venues.

What if social media wasn’t engineered to serve capitalism’s need for growth? How might online collective communication be different if our time and attention were treated as the limited and precious resources that they are? Minus is an experiment to ask these questions, a finite social network where users get only 100 posts—for life. Rather than the algorithmic feeds, visible “like” counts, noisy notifications, and infinite scrolls employed by the platforms to induce endless user engagement, Minus limits how much one posts to the feed, and foregrounds—as its only visible and dwindling metric—how few opportunities they have left. Instead of preying on our needs for communication and connection in order to transform them into desires for speed and accumulation, Minus offers an opportunity to reimagine what it means to be connected in the contemporary age.

From 1970 to 1989, Haus der Statistik operated as the Central Administrative Headquarters for Statistics in the German Democratic Republic: an institution for the cybernetic regulation of society and everyday life.
Working from the site-specific history of Haus der Statistik, Calculating Control explores the impact of cybernetics on artistic and social practices, networks, and technology. Connecting Haus der Statistik with other locations and histories of cybernetic ideals, Calculating Control draws a trajectory from this building to contemporary algorithmic practices and their socio-political effects, many of which mark a crucial point of reference for netart.
As an artistic practice of network society, netart traces systems of cybernetic administration and renders their forms visible and subject to revision. Over the duration of six months, Calculating Control will unravel cybernetic thinking in the space of two separate exhibitions, a symposium, an unconference, as well as an online journal.
25th Anniversary
2021 marks the 25th anniversary of Igor Štromajer‘s first net art work 0.HTML (created in January 1996) and the 10th anniversary of its deletion (2011).
