“National Theatre, Identity and (Geo)politics”
The article deals with the historical emergence and social role of national theatres. It also explains the terminological differences between the notions of national, people’s and state theatres in different language environments and historical periods. Using examples from the former Yugoslavia, where 35 national theatres were active in 1990, and the foundation of the third Slovene National Theatre in Nova Gorica (in 2003), the paper examines how national theatres have been connected with mechanisms of social control and what the role has been of ethnic, geographical and political denotations in the names of theatres. Also considered is the massive founding of national theatres in the former Yugoslavia as a symptom of the decay of the state and the growing ethnopluralism. Finally, the approaches of contemporary theatre creators in Slovenia (Janez Janša, Igor Štromajer, NSK and Andrej Rozman – Roza) to the issues of identity are presented, as well as the role of national theatre in the period of transnationalism, globalisation and mass media.

“Nacionalno gledališče, identiteta in (geo)politika”
Prispevek obravnava zgodovinsko in družbeno vlogo nacionalnih gledališč.
