# project: The Netherlands is respectful. Russia is corrupt. (video)

Igor Stromajer describes himself on his website as an ‘intimate mobile communicator’. He continues: “- researches tactical emotional states and traumatic low-tech strategies. He has shown his work at more than a hundred exhibitions in forty-two countries and received a number of awards. As artist in residence he lectures at universities and contemporary art institutes. His works are included in the permanent collections of various international museums”. However impressive the list is that follows more interesting is his statement: “I believe in intimacy, individualism, emotions, frustrations, traumas, artificial, communication, impossibility, mobility, montage, radicality, sensibility, silence, strategy, tactics, tears, orgasm, concept, pleasure, fantasies, philosophy, transfer, utopia and angels. I do not believe in media, tourism and the end. [Art is a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it]”

Visual Foreign Correspondents

Urban Video
by Igor Stromajer

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, February 2008

Co-produced by Intima Virtual Base (Slovenia), De Balie Centre for Culture and Politics, De Volkskrant (Oog) and The Netherlands Institute for Media Art

In his work The Netherlands is respectful. Russia is corrupt. Štromajer is in search of current verdicts about the different countries from Eastern and Western Europe. They take the form of stereotypical sentences and surprising quotes and run parallel across the screen. The hierarchical devide between East and West changes once you try to read the sentences. The speed of the sentences makes the words tumble and meanings become interchangeable.

Visual Foreign Corespondents is a monthly series of audiovisual artworks for the public screen and online related to The Globalised Crystal Ball, an international debating program in De Balie. Distinguished artists from around the world are invited each month to give their personal visual commentary on events and situations from their local perspective.

Curated by Nanette Hoogslag, David Garcia, Petra Heck, Nat Muller, Eric Kluitenberg.

This weekend: Schreib dein Lied! / Write your song! – @textxtnd live at @basisfrankfurt 🎤 concert performance, 13, 14, 15 Dec 2019 🎶 among others → a #poem by @iintima: Ich bin (nicht gut genug) / I Am (Not Good Enough) will be set to music, sung and played live exclusively for this performance 🎼 "An experimental #performance with #music and #lyrics, based on new #German art, folk and pop lyrics by people around us. Schreib dein Lied! aims to focus on our relationship to the German #language in all its cultural and social forms. Our language is shaped by all those who acquire it and make use of it. It is as diverse as our society and only in all its forms the language of the 'people'. These heterogeneous forms are to be brought back into the #song, into the canon of cultural exchange between people who live here." 🎵 Oliver #Augst: vocals, composition | Alexandre #Bellenger: turntables | Arnaud #Rivière: percussion, electronics | Charlotte #Arens: dramaturgy, production management | Production/Conception: #textXTND – textxtnd.de | Sponsored by the Kulturamt der Stadt #Frankfurt am Main, the Hessische Ministerium für Wissenschaft und #Kunst ● [img]: textXTND/basis-frankfurt.de
